Facebook has recently changed their policy to allow the creation of custom tabs only for Official Facebook Pages not personal profiles, community or group pages. The creation of a custom tab from scratch requires creating an application, hosting your files (images and php/html files) somewhere and a decent knowledge of HTML and FBML the Facebook markup language.

Alternatively there are services available that simplify the process either drastically like SplashTab.com or Fanpageengine.com. These sites are essentially content management for Facebook Page Tabs, they host all the files and automate much of the process.

Consider using pre-made facebook apps for building custom tabs on your fan page. There are two ways to add a custom tab to your Facebook page:

- use pre-made application that builds a tab and custom content for it; or

- create app on your own and then add it to your page (which results into tab addition)
