Of course, you can't create an actual myth since those take centuries to grow into the public consciousness, but you can make up a pretend myth for a story or book. Just pick anything that needs explaining - like why does the sun come up or what makes a rainbow or how do flowers grow - then think of something mythical that would explain that thing.

Why does anyone believe in myths. Because at the time they explained the world in which the people that created the myth lived. The earth was thought to be flat. The earth was thought to be carried on the back of a turtle. The sun was thought to be a God . . . etc. All of these are now known as myth. The Chinese were not the only people who had a mythology.
