To crop with GIMP, select the crop tool from your toolbox (the thing that comes up when gimp starts with all of the buttons on it) and click your picture. The crop tool looks like a little knife pointing left and it's between the box icon with four arrows pointing outwards and the icon with two blue rectangles with white arrows. Once you have found that button, click it. Then click your picture. A screen should pop up with a height and width number that you can adjust. Simply change those numbers to what you want or drag the lines on the picture to change the area you want. Then click the picture or hit 'ok' and your picture will be cropped.
After opening your image, you can select the crop tool and select the part you want to keep. After you have it perfect hit the enter key. This will complete the crop.
