There are a couple of things you can do to maintain your horse's coat color. The worst enemies of the horse's coat is bad health and the weather. Make sure your horses is in good health and free from parasites. Keep him on a regular deworming program. If you need help with this consult your vet. If he is in good health lets move on to the other factor. Sun and wind can fade/dull the horse's coat. If you can keep him out of the hot sun. This doesn't mean he can't go out durning the summer. It means you may have to keep him covered up. A good fly sheet is light-weight and blocks a lot of the UV rays that fade the coat. If you are really picky put a sleezy type head and neck cover. Or keep him in a full face fly mask. This will not only protect his hair and eyes from the sun it will keep the insects out of his eyes. And last, there are commercial products you can feed your horse that can help keep his colors dark. These products are feed daily to the horse in his daily feed and they do work pretty well. It will depend on your budget if you want to take these precautions. As an alternative to the feed additive add paprika to your horse's feed instead. I do this for my horses and it really works quite well. You can get the extra large containers at warehouse grocery outlets. To start, feed several Tbls a feeding and eventually work up to about 1/2 cup at a feeding. Don't expect overnight results. Any changes to hooves and hair take up to 3 months to see any difference. Footnote:Nothing can replace vigorous daily grooming to keep your horse's coat looking good.

Yes they can. They have to buy a golden apple and use it on their horse to get the coat though. Also, sometimes a coat will be retired. At that point, that coat can no longer be used. Horses who already have it will be able to keep it, but no new horses will be able to get it.
