How can you keep a female and male dog apart during her cycle?

The short answer is: you can't. He can smell her for blocks or even miles depending on his nose. He can smell where she's been and where she's peed. Stray dogs can (and will) actually track her back to your house. Proper management is critical. Keep them in separate rooms. Be aware that some dogs can figure out how to open doors. In such a case, put them in separate rooms with each in a crate and a carabiner reinforcing the door of the crate. Walk them separately. Do not allow them in sight of each other. Intact males can be extremely determined when a bitch in season is nearby. They can even breed through the wall of a crate given the opportunity. If they manage to get together despite your best efforts, do not attempt to pull them appart. During intercourse a gland on the male's penis swells while the female's vulva contracts. They literally become locked together (this is called a "tye"). They can be permanantly injured of forceably pulled appart. When they do come apart, take the female immediately to the vet. You have only 24 hours in which to take action. The vet can administer a "mis-mate" shot which will prevent pregnancy. Think of it as a morning after pill for dogs.

If you don't have a proper kennel setup for breeding/boarding dogs, then it will be with a lot of luck. You will need a very strong crate in separate parts of the house. Your female will eventually seek out a suitor and may go crazy looking for your male to mate. Your male may howl and go through a lot of effort to get to the female. The best way to keep your un-neutered male dog from barking or howling during a female dogs heat cycle is to have him fixed.

However, if you are unable to have your dog neutered immediately there are a few things you can try to help keep him from driving you and your neighbors crazy. Assuming of course that you are keeping your male dog sepereated from the female in heat.

If they are not already seperated, Keep your male dog crated in a seperate room of the house so that he cannot dig, chew, or mark. Cover the door of the crate with a towel to help keep him calm, and give him a bone, bully stick, or some sort of durable chew so that he can relieve his frustration. Do not allow the female in heat to enter the same room as the male dog. You may also want to keep your female dog crated as well. Do not let them out for potty breaks or play together. Each dog should have their own seperate play/break time. Your male already knows there is a female in heat, and just being around one will only tease him.

Now that they are seperated and he is vocalizing his desire..what should you do?

1) Squirt bottle. Everytime he barks, tell him Shhh! and then squirt him in the face. Eventually he will stop once he hears the warning. If he does not stop. Some people reccomend adding lemon juice to the squirt bottle water and squirting the dog in the mouth, if you do this be carefull NOT to get it into the dogs eyes.

A male dog may not eat or sleep during the last 14 days of the females heat cycle and is more likely to howl and bark at this stage. Well if you don't want it to have babies with it then you have to "fix" your dog aka operate it so it can't have babies, if you want to make them stop while its happening try distracting it or like maybe picking it up (i suggest not to because

my dog was like humping an item and when my brother tried to stop him he bit him really hard and got mad) or like give it a toy. If it ends up having/giving birth to a baby you can always sell them, to other people with a good price.
