They are both very good to know. Althought you will have to money if you want to use ranged attacks.
its 100% up to you, its al personal preference... melee is good for heavy hitting against somethings, but range is usually safer even if weaker

They are weak to slash, so technically it's best to melee them but if you are a low level, you will hit ok using Iron Arrows+ depending on your ranged level.
