i work as an assembly mechanic for a polaris dealer, and all i can say for sure is that the tenth digit of the serial number is the year.... example....3=1993 or 2003
You will have to take it to a factory dealer and have them run it for you. There is no info on decoding a 9 digit, only the 17 digit vin number's (1983 or later).

First, if you know it is a 1988 RM why are asking for the year. Second, it must be a 17 digit vin number to decode what year it is (if you didn't know if was a 1988 already).
