Only in the DS version, they are needed to fight the Nega Mother Wisp.
the reason why wisps are in sonic colors are because if you listen to the story eggman tries kidnapping them to turn them into nega wisps. the other reason they are there is because so then sonic can use them for help like rocket.

After that, watch the boring credits and after that the game will restart and then, you can access to the mother nega wisp level wich is in the top of the map
