A sportsman is a male human being who participates in sports. The term sometimes refers to a man engaged in the activities of hunting or fishing for recreation. The term also refers to a man or woman who displays the characteristics of fairness, courtesy to one's competitors, humility in winning, and courage in the midst of losing or adversity when participating in sports. Sometimes the terms "sportsman" and "athlete" are used synonymously. However, strictly speaking, an athlete is someone, male or female, who competes in the running, jumping, and throwing events of track & field.
