The term
Because there was a second world war and it made it easier to define quickly which war was being spoken about.
Old World: Africa, Asia, and Europe. New World: North America, South America, and Oceania. I'm not sure if Antarctica is part of the Old World or New World.
It depends on how you define peace. I believe the world has never been completely at peace. There is always a war somewhere, even if we do not hear about it.
