Examine the light of hydrogen emissions from a distant galaxy.
Compare that spectrum with that of hydrogen in a laboratory.
You'll find that spectrum is identical EXCEPT that it is shifted towards longer wavelengths.
Doppler effect Red Shift
One of the most reliable methods employed presently is using Hubbles Laws and Constant, utilizing the red shift. RED SHIFT A+LS (:
The red shift IS the Doppler Effect. I use the sound of a car or motor bike passing by on a road. The high pitch of the approaching vehicle suddenly drops to a low pitch as it speeds by and retreats.Note:Cosmological redshift is not attributed to the Doppler Effect, but to the metric expansion of the universe.
The Doppler redshift was discovered by Hippolyte Fizeau in 1848.
Blue shift is a decrease of a signal's wavelength, and/or an increase in its frequency, due to the Doppler Effect. This indicates that the object is moving towards the observer.Red shift is the increase of a signal's wavelength, and/or a decrease in its frequency, due to the Doppler Effect. This indicates that the object is moving away from the observer.
The Doppler effect.
Actually, it wasn't the Doppler-effect that lead to the Big Bang theory, but the red-shift of remote galaxies. Although it was initially thought that this red-shift might be caused by a Doppler-effect, it is now understood that this red-shift is caused by the metric expansion of space itself.

The Doppler effect is the mix of red shift and blue shift. For example when your walking down the street and a car drives up from behind you and you don't see it but hear it your hearing the blue shift of the Doppler effect. also same scenario but the car has passed and driving away in front of you then your hearing the red shift of the Doppler effect. hope that helps I'm in 8th grade might wanna check but I'm pretty sure that's right well that's what we learned today anyway...:)

A blue-shift means an object is moving towards us, a red-shift means it is moving away from us. Blue-shift and red-shift are changes in frequency of the light we receive, due to the relative movement. This is called the Doppler effect.
A misunderstanding of red shift is the indicator is expanding. The correct understanding of red shift indicates the universe is in continuity, not expanding and is finite. RED SHIFT OF DISTANT GALAXIES.
