In Battlefield 3, gadgets are a type of item in multiplayer. These can be unlocked by gaining points in a particular multiplayer class; Assault, Engineer, Support or Recon.
Once the player has unlock a gadget, they must first 'equip' that gadget on the corresponding multiplayer class. For example, if the player has unlock a 'Defibrillator' for the 'Assault' class, they must first 'equip' the gadget on their class's character.
To do this, the player can either go to 'My Solider' from the main menu, then select their class and then select the gadget. Alternatively the player, whilst in-game but before spawning, open the 'Customizations and gadgets' panel and select their class and gadget.
To deploy the gadget, the player must press the corresponding button. On default settings, this the left & right D-pad buttons on PlayStation 3 and the left & right thumb pad buttons on the Xbox 360. To find what button the player must press to deploy gadgets, go to the 'Options' menu and under 'Controls' scroll down to 'Soldier Buttons'.
Typically, the left gadget button is for deploying the 'M320' grenade launcher, the 'M26 MASS' shotgun, 'Medkit', 'Ammo Box', launchers such as the 'SMAW' and other gadgets. The right gadgets buttons are for the 'Defibrillator', 'Repair Tool', 'T-UGS' and 'Radio Beacon' and other gadgets.
