Look on your dash inside of your car. Next to your speedometer will be your tachometer. if it is on anything but zero, your engine is running.

There is coolant in the engine block when the engine is not running. The engine block, heater, hoses and radiator remain full when engine is not running.
Hard to tell without hearing it. With engine running, open the hood and try to determine the area where the noise is coming from then repost info.

My advice would be to set the points at .020" with a feeler gage to get the engine running, and then use a dwell meter to set the dwell after the engine is running.
To determine if a truck is diesel-powered, you can check the fuel cap or fuel door for labels indicating diesel fuel, look for a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank, or listen for a louder engine noise and a distinctive diesel engine sound when the truck is running.
Older vehicle (non-computer, uses points): With engine running, remove either lead from the battery (taking it out of the circut). If the engine quits, it needs a battery, if not, do diagnostics on the alternator.
