The United States and Canada are both part of the North American Numbering Plan, an integrated telephone numbering system that also includes 18 island nations and territories in or near the Caribbean. Telephone numbers in the NANP consist of the telephone country code +1, an area code (always 3 digits) and a subscriber number (always 7 digits).

Calls within the NANP, including calls from the US to Canada or vice-versa, are dialed "one plus," the same as a domestic long distance call. For example, a call to Calgary, Alberta, (403) 555-0123 would be dialed simply as 1-403-555-0123.

The telephone country code for the USA (plus Canada and certain Caribbean-ish islands) is +1, followed by the three-digit area code and 7-digit subscriber number.

On a mobile phone, just dial +1 (including the plus symbol) and then the US number.

On a landline, replace the plus symbol with your international access prefix. The prefix that you use may depend on your long distance telephone company. The default prefix is 000, but there are other prefixes in the ranges 00x, 01x, and 15xx.

Add 65 before the number you dial. Remember that if you are calling to residential numbers, add another 6 behind the 65 which becomes 656******* (* = number)

Why is Canada an international call if the same country code is used?

Canada is an international call from the United States because Canada is a different country. Likewise, even though Russia and Kazakhstan share telephone country code +7, a call from Russia to Kazakhstan or vice-versa is still an international call, because it is a call from one country to a different country.
