on the left side of the steering wheel there is a black circle with kind of like a knob, all you have to do is turn it all the way to the right. make sure you dont have the emergency brake on.
There really isn't an "off" for the headlights. The only way to have them not on after dark, is to pull the e-brake, and turn the car on. They will be off as long as the e-brake is engaged. Let off the e-brake, and they automatically come on again.
The only way to turn off the DRL (daytime running lights) is to remove the fuse that controls that function. There is no switch or computer code that changes that.
Set the parking brake before you start the car. If you've already started it, shut the car off & then set the brake and retry. That should kill the lights.

on my 2003 there is a knob on the left hand side of the dash that controls the headlites. if you turn it all the way to the left (its spring loaded) while the vehicle is on the lites will turn off.

On a 2001 Mercury Cougar : Turn your low beam headlights on and then pull the headlight control towards you ( push in to turn foglights off )
Has to be in park with the emergency brake on, or maybe they would turn off if you just tripped the switch on the emergency brake without actually engaging it. That way it wouldn't have to be in park.
a bad sensor. the alero is notorius for many bad sensors. not an expensive replacement though
