I am a troubled teen myself and if you wanna discipline you kid if he did something wrong look for what he likes most and take it away from him till he listens then reward him by giving it back.Another thing you can do is ground him from his friends or if he plays sports tell him that he cant go to practice or games inless he listens stuff like that.

How can parents be strict without being abusive?

It's hard for many people to understand the difference between discipline and abuse: Abuse: Hitting and leaving marks on the skin. Parent: "You stupid idiot! Why do I have to CONSTANTLY remind you that it's disrespectful to interrupt people while they're talking? Don't you have ANY patience to wait your turn?" Discipline: Hitting and leaving NO marks on the skin. Parent: "Either you stop acting like a spoiled brat or else you're grounded for the weekend. You will stay home and not be allowed to leave the house without permission."
