When you add a new post, there will be six symbols above the editing area. The one on the far left is for uploading photos. When you click on it, there will be an option to upload photos from your computer. Once you choose the photo and Wordpress finishes uploading it, you can write a title, descriptions, and captions (descriptions and captions are optional). Then you can choose how large/small you want it to be (thumbnail, medium, large, full size), and where you want it to be displayed (none, left, right, center). You may have an option to use the photo as a featured image.
If your theme allows it, you can upload a photo into the customizable header. Under Appearance > Header you will have the option to upload and crop a photo. This photo will usually show up at the top of every page on your blog, depending on your theme. If you use featured images, these will show up at the top rather than your header image, if the reader has clicked on a specific post.
