it wood be 2 long to say--but here's a good website for learning some gimp stitches. It's called (you can't google it; you gotta use the big box at the top of the google page next to the googling box) igimp.webs.com.
Right click on the selection, mouse over "Select...", choose "none".
I assume you mean after pasting an image into gimp. Right-click on the layer in the layer box, and click "new layer" that will put the image on it's own layer. Odd wording, I know.
if your making a box, take the four pieces that are left-over and tie a knot on each one
