When you first downloaded maplestory, you should have either automaticly downloaded it, or manually. If you didn't click the option to download the FULL CLIENT, first download the full client manualy by searching for the button. It should be near the top where it says " If you can't download it automatily, download it manualy". Click on that, download it, and only when it's fully downloaded may you cancel the other maplestory you downloaded. If it says you already have the client, first delete, and then download it.

Your maplestory should get a patch up download when you hit the play button. That patch up will upgrade your version to the latest version that is released. Currently in March 2010, mapleglobal is at v83 so... if you missed version 55-83 i suggest you to uninstall and redownload your maple because missing too much patch ups will cause your maple to stop working. If you have version 80 for an example, you cant go backwards in versions. Just not possible.
