It is best to reserve an entire disk for the second operating system. Sometimes different OSs don't play well together on different partitions of the same hard drive.

If you want to dual boot, most modern bios's will have a key that you press during start-up that will allow you to select the drive that you want to boot to.

If you want to boot from a partition on a hard drive, you will need a program that will function as a boot manager. Grub and LILO are commonly used boot managers for Linux. You can also pay for a program that will do the same thing, like Partition Magic.

If you want to use the empty space on your Windows hard drive you will need to move all of your files to one end (so to speak) of the disk so there will be uninterrupted space to put the second partition. Again, there are programs that will do this. One is built into Windows and named FIPS.EXE. The "antidote" for fips is restorrb.exe, so you should copy both of those programs to a bootable floppy before you start playing. Partition Magic can do the same thing with less terror.

Another way that you can get more than one operating system on a machine is to install it as a Virtual Machine. It will run under an operating system in a window (or full screen if you so desire). Using a virtual machine is a way of trying out an OS before you decide to install it as a full-fledged alternate OS.

Which should be installed first windows or Linux and why?

I cannot tell you which SHOULD come first. In my case, I installed XP first, and Vista second - because following Vista with an XP installation destroys the boot loader. XP will not detect Vista or offer a dualboot option. Similarly, following this dual boot with a Linux installation will install a 'lilo' or 'grub'. Grub is becoming the most popular boot loader, and installing it last will ensure that you can boot all of the current operating systems. Grub is extremely user friendly, and can be modified simply by editing the text file.

Can you use Windows 7 and windows on same PC?

Answer:Yes, and it's called Dualbooting. The steps to create a dualboot system with WindowsXP, Vista and/or Windows7 are too detailed to list here, but here are the basic steps.First you need to divide the hard drive into two logical sectors (sections)1. Using the Windows Disk management program, shrink the original partition2. Create a new partition large enough to install the second Windows OS3. Insert the Windows CD which you intend to instsll4. Logoff and restart your computer (make sure the CD drive is bootable)Install other version of Windows5. Install the second version of Windows on the new partition which you just created (likely will be E or F) Make absolutely sure that you choose the Correct Partition before installing the second version of Windows. You don't want to overwrite the existing partitiion.6. Once installing the second Windows version (this takes at least 45min) the system will restart and you should be presented with an option of choosing between two versions of Windows* These are only the very basic steps to take to Dualbooting. Do a Google search for more in-depth steps. Particularly when it comes to partitioning your hard drive correctly or data loss can occur
