If you have locking hubs, set them to lock position, put tranny in neatral,, then push 4X4 button on dash then back into drive,, and away ya go,,,,,
It depends on when you hear the noise, but it likely a joint in the front wheel drive unit.

Your Ford Explorer will only drive after putting it in drive and letting it warm up because it has a mechanical problem.
Automatic hubs or manual? If manual make sure they are turned all the way until it clicks into correct spot. Sometimes they get sticky and do not engage. Is it making noise when you put in 4wd? when you put it in does it still move? what are symtoms? How do you know it is not engaging?

You can't. The 1994 JGC has Quadra Trac, all the time 4 wheel drive. It should never go into 2 wheel drive. If it does, have your Jeep looked at immediately.
