if you are talking about tag tournaments then there is a certain stage in the game where you need to duel and beat a duelist in domino city for them to become your partner and then you go the tournament and yea.

If you are talking about a turbo tournament then there is also another stage in the game straight after the tag tournament. you have a better chance in winning if you have speed spells and good strategies. good luck :)
