To equip a spirit to use its power on your sword (this will only work if you upgraded the spirit to level 1 in Spirit Island because you had at least 10 spirit gems for that spirit), go to Menu, then collections, and then choose the spirit that has its level number under it. Select it, and then exit out to see that your sword is upgraded to its power.
