I learned about syllables by clapping. Section up a word into syllables and for each syllable/section of the word, clap. The amount of claps used is the amount of syllables. It sounds kind of complicated the way I've described it but once you get the hang of it, everyone will!
Try it with people's names first. For example,
Amy: A-my has two syllables and two claps.
Daniella: Dan-i-ell-a has four sections and four claps.
George: George has one syllable so therfore has one clap.
