People fast to deny the worldly part of their being what it wants/desires. We fast to keep our mind upon God and to see him working within us. We fast to further explore the reaches of our physical being, and see the spiritual workings within us. We fast to stay prepared at all times for the coming of the Lord. We fast to be closer to God. We fast to prove our faith. We fast for emphasis upon a prayer. We fast to feel compassion, for the sick and weak and poor. We fast to give our colon a break. We fast for cleansing, spiritually and physically. And most importantly, we fast to be obedient to the Word.
The best way to grow spiritually is by putting into practice whatever spiritual knowledge you already have.
