In the US, you file as a sole proprietor, using Schedule C on form 1040. You have to decide are you going to track your costs and expenses using accrual methods or actual cash expenditures. In most cases, accrual will lead to easier returns and more accurate matching of expenses and income.

According to the IRS website, several taxes must be withheld (unless your employee is an independent contractor). If the employee is an independent contractor you must fill out form SS-8, determination of worker status, which can be found on the IRS website. If not, then the employee is responsible for paying Federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare taxes and Federal unemployment taxes (FUTA). What is economic reality test?

The economic Reality Test is a test used by courts to further determine between an employee and an independent contractor. They use this mainly to determine if payroll taxes should have been paid on a person working for a business. If the contractor end up being classified as an employee, the business owes payroll taxes on the money paid to that person. If the person is determined to be an independent contractor, then the person owes income taxes on the money paid to them.

When doing an online job how do the taxes work?

Pretty much the same as if you go to the office. If you are an 'employee' you will file a W-4 with the employer and he should withhold federal and possibly state taxes and send you a W-2 at the end of the year. If you are an independent contractor, the employer will send you a Form 1099-Misc at the end of the year (and a copy to the government) and you will pay the taxes then. Most independent contractors should be filing estimated taxes quarterly to avoid a penalty when filing.
