How do you add layer styles in Photoshop?

With an image open go to the layers palette and click the new layer icon - it's at the bottom of the palette next to the trash icon (it looks like a sheet of paper with the bottom left corner curled up)

To merge layers in Photoshop just select the layer you want to merge with the down layer and then press the keyboard shortcut CTRL + E.your layers will merge. there is one more way to do this, you have to go in the layer list, it is in the top toolbar,there is an option of merge layers,click on it and your layers will merge.

you can use layers to enhance and build image. In the layers tab with all of your current layers (one layer is most likely 'Background') There should be a icon near the bottom of the layers window that looks like a post-it note peeling back one corner. This will create an additional empty layer that is the same size as the canvas.
