with the axles out and differential installed add gear lube while you look down the axle tube until it just starts to flow down the tube
where is fill plug located on 1994 mustang gt, rear diff
Usually there is a fill only & have to remove the cover. When you reinstall just fill to bottom of hole. Plug on cover or top of "pumkin".You need a diff cover gasket & gear oil of course. It's tricky getting a good seal so use a torque wrench & criss cross when the time comes.
Place a drain pan under the differential. Loosen the bolts, but don't take the diff cover completely off. Let the fluid drain into the drain pan. When it stops draining, take the diff cover off. Siphon out the remaining fluid from the bottom of the diff. Scrape off the remaining gasket. Place the new gasket on, with some RTV. Put the diff cover back on and tighten it. Remove the fill plug. Fill to the bottom of the fill plug. Replace the fill plug.
front or rear? the front is slightly higher and rear of the drain... the back has a cover you remove to drain the fluid and a fill on the front of the diff..
get a half inch driver socket wrench, locate the drain plug on the diff. drain plug will be close to the bottom of diff or if there is no drain bolt you must remove entire diff cover, probably 10 bolts. drain, replace gasket or make new one with RTV torque bolts to "gut-n-tight" German standards and fill with new oil at fill plug(upper part of diff cover). recycle oil then take a shower because you probably got some nasty smelling 80-90w on your skin. Done.
raise the rear end 8 inches remove fill plug then drain plug, replace copper washer on plugs insert drain plug to 30 ft-lbs, fill by using small siphon hand pump, or angle the bottle, insert fill plug 30 ft-lbs the rear diff holds 1.7 quarts.
THere is a fill plug located approximately 2\3rd up from bottom. fill differential with Diff oil until level with bottom of the plug.
Remove the 10 bolts that secure the differential cover, pry the cover off, the fluid will drain out, clean the old gasket sealant off of the cover & housing, apply a thin bead of RTV to the diff cover & bolt it back into place, use a criss-cross pattern to tighten the bolts back up, fill the diff through the fill hole on the diff cover, will take aprox 1.5 quarts, stop filling when fluid leaks out of the fill hole, replace fill plug.
