How do you find other people's message boards?
You click on someones name. That will take you to their bio page. On the right you'll see a picture of an envelope with "Message user," right next to it. Click on either one, and their message board well appear. You can also go to the very bottom of their bio page. Enjoy the day/evening.
Message boards make it possible for the general public to have a conversation. You can read them and find out what other people have to say, and you can post your own thoughts so that others can find out what you have to say. There is no guarantee that anybody will say anything interesting, but then, some message boards attract more interesting writers than others. Pointless and overheated arguments are always a possibility.

How can you thank all the people who helped you with your question and let them know their replies were appreciated?
A good place to thank folks is right on their personal message boards. You could even click on the Discussion Page tab of the question you asked and post a message of thanks there, too. The history/discussion page is a good place to see all who have contributed. If you click their usernames, you will find links to their message boards.
You can search for members - by clicking the magnifying glass in the top-right of the screen. That'll let you enter a username to search for. Assuming you find the person you're looking for - Look on their profile for a link that says 'Message User' - it'll be on the right - just below their 'Stats' box. Clicking on that link will take you to their message board, where you can write a message.
Answers and WikiAnswers are not primarily social websites for contacting friends. They are Q&A and information websites. Members may include a profile and there are message boards for each member. You will need to know their username on Answers to send a message. It is not an instant message service.
