How do you stay on beat when playing music?

Drink lots of water. Eat. Listen to the beats of the other instruments like the guitar. When practicing avoid girls in to flirt on. Get them out of the garage. Dim light and curtained windows. Did I mention NO GIRLS? Just concentrate fool. Without knowing how long you have been playing or how old you are it's a difficult question to answer. You can pick up clues from other peoples body language and such. If you're talking about 'rock' music and other music with a drummer, that is your beat maker. But the best place to know where the beat is at is right square in your heart and soul. With some music it's easy to pick out unlike some classical and some jazz. But if you can't find the beat naturally it'll be impossible to play to it at a consistant level. It's kind of like being in love, you can't explain it but you know when you have it. I have a relative who can't find the beat even if you flash a light at him and set of a small explosive at the same time. Even with that being said you still need to concentrate like the previous answer mentioned. That's a requirement!

This means that the rhythm of a song is three beats, then four beats. And it keeps repeating until another notation is seen.
