First, find out something about the author's life: many authors wrote a particular story because of something happening in their life at that time, or because of some event (or some person) that influenced them. Second, look up (using a reliable source) the history of the story-- were there earlier versions of it, was it based on facts or is it fiction, did other authors write anything similar, etc. The more you know about the origin of a story, the better your understanding of that story will be.
