If the speedometer is going on and off, then there is usually a connection that is coming loose. You can check the sensor that runs on top of the transmission and make sure that it is completely plugged properly. If it is barely off, then it can cause both your speedometer and odometer to stop randomly. Also you may try checking behind the dash board and made sure all of the connections are right.
