How do you fix bookworm that says unable to prepare game executable?

Short answer: Reinstall it. You can back up your saved games and restore them afterward so you wont lose any progress.
The saved game files are all in the folder named "players" in the game folder. Just copy the entire folder to someplace else (like your desktop), uninstall, reinstall, copy folder back to the place you found it.
(most likely C:\Program Files\PopCap Games\BookWorm Deluxe)
Long answer:
This happened on my new Vista computer and it seemed to be caused by the game not deleting temporary files after it closed. If you go to the Bookworm Deluxe folder in "Program Files" you will probably see two files named "game.exe" and "game2.exe" (you will need view hidden files turned on). If you delete these two files, the game will work two more times.
I tried everything I could think of: compatibility mode, run as administrator, unchecked the "read only" box on the "Bookworm Deluxe" folder and applied to all folders and files inside. The strange thing is that the game worked fine for quite some time, and then just started messing up for no real reason. So far the only thing that worked for me was to uninstall, and reinstall (using compatibility mode on the installer).

- Click the START button in the bottom left of your screen.
- Click CONTROL PANEL.
- Click PROGRAMS.
- Under "Program and Features", select "Use an older program with this version of Windows" and follow the on-screen prompts to get your game up and running.
If you don't see the option they refer to, make sure the control panel is not in "classic view".
You can also use this wizard to set "Bookworm.exe" in the "Bookworm Deluxe" folder to use compatibility mode for Windows XP and make sure you also check the box for "run as administrator". That is what I did and so far it hasn't messed up again.
I did notice that I am running version 1.03 as I installed from the cdrom, and they have a newer version on the download section of the website (version 1.13) that lists "Vista compliance". In Insaniquarium (and probably other Popcap games), delete the file "game.exe" from the game's folder. It will be created next time you run InsaniquariumDeluxe.exe Alternately, uninstall and then reinstall the game.
