to the best of my knowledge you can not fix the handle itself you need to get another one I have a 97 gmc also and the handles have broke. What I did was go to pull a part (a junk yard) where they had the whole assembly that I was able to change. That way you don't have to worry about the rods coming out and you not being able to open the door. Because the rods are bent and have been clamped in place.
