I had the same problem. I was able to do it myself using the instructions with pictures at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/. Specifically, you can get there at this link:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187953
The instructions are detailed with pictures that show the whole process. This writeup was done several years ago by the guy who discovered this fix and it's been free the whole time. There are hucksters out there who have copied this fix and are charging for it. Fairly easy fix (you may want have to learn to solder, but there are instructions regarding that too).
Additional information:
I had exactly the same problem where the unit suddenly went blank. Here is the procedure:
1- Press the mode switch several times to make sure it is not in the blank mode. OK? keep going.
2- Check the 7.5 A fuse number 10. OK keep going.
3- Remove the two screws holding the unit to the ceiling and pulled the unit
from the front to release the two clips.
4- Use a T-10 torx bit to disassamble evey thing in the unit and to
get to the printed circuit board.
5Look for two surface mount resistors next to each other with 510 printed
on them. Check to see if they desoldered themselves off the board.
6- You can resolder them or replace them. I resoldered mine.
7- Use two 68 ohms quarter watt resistors (to reduce power disspation)
and solder them in their place.
8- You can check your work by attaching the board to the wire harness and
to the plug in the ceiling and turn ignition on.
9- If everything is Ok (as I hope) disconnect the board and reassemble the
unit and install it back.
Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
Where is the power connection found for the temperature and direction in the explorer sport trac
On a 1999 Explorer there is a 7.5 amp fuse in location # 10 of the fuse panel for the overhead console.
The compass is inside the overhead message center ( it is not serviceable separately ). The sensor for the temp display is either attached to the grill or the driver side of the radiator.
The flowchart in isolating and diagnosing the condition is two-fold. First, all relays and fuses aspect to this circuit should be inspected for blowing or shorts. Second, the screen can be pulled and its harness tested for a current via a meter.
The 1999 Dodge Durango overhead console wiring connections are beneath the overhead console. You will need to remove the overhead console?æin order to access the wiring connections.
