You probably have a fried audio output module. It is one of the big ones attached to the heat sink. There are two different audio output modules on this unit. One is an STK-408-040E and the other is an STK-411-230E. Either or both of these being bad is probably your problem which is causing the protection circuit to engage. Good luck.
Could be a wire crossing in the speakers, the radio itself might be bad. Does it do it all the time? Speakers might be blown. Or, your antenna lead is not plugged into the rear of the radio. Is it radio static, or does it have static on cd/tape as well?
all you have to do when you are installing the radio and connecting the wires is bypass the ignition (yellow) and connect it with the battery..........the only thing is you HAVE to manually turn the power on and off otherwise it'll drain the sucker!!! it only took my uncle and i 4 hours to figure how to reset the alarm and to fix this problem!! hope this saves yinz some time!! -----Ainjul
If your 1998 VW Beetle has a radio preset button that will not push anymore, you can sometimes fix it by prying the button out of the radio with a butter knife. Then, clean behind the button and clean the button itself. Pop the button back into the radio.
Replace the radio.
You need the 5-digit code for the radio. The system locks when power has been disabled or the radio removed from the vehicle. Call a MB dealership. I have the same problem with my '99 SLK230. I know the code too. The book says if power has been interupted and the code has been entered incorrectly more than 3 times, the system will lock itself out. However, the book also says that once the radio is on again it should reset itself in 10 minutes or so. I have let my car run with the radio turned on for more than 30 minutes and it didn't reset so I could enter the code. Now, does anyone know how to fix this?
learn proper grammar and by a new phone
I'd bet it's a loose connector somewhere in your wiring loom. It'll probably be simple to fix, but probably hard to find

try taking off the little security bezel (buttons 2 - 5) and carefully flex the plastic to concave in the middle with the buttons facing you then put the bezel back in place. it used to do this with mine and i think the metal contacts on the back were not connecting. either that or when the radio switches itself off just push and hold the bezel down for a few seconds and it should hopefully come back on
