The moon was formed when an piece of planetary rock, roughly the size of mars, collided with earth. The resulting collision, caused a huge piece of rock from the earth to fly out into space, where it now orbits earth as our moon.
Two other theories are tied in with this idea;
1. That it was THIS asteroid that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs
2. That it was this asteroid that brought humans to earth, in the form of a tiny organism from another planet, riding on the asteroid from another planet
