There are many ways to greet other people in Japanese. These vary depending on time of day, social standing, and how close you are (not physically, I mean how friendly) to the other person.

To say hello in the morning, you can say Ohayou gozaimasu (formal) or simply Ohayou (to someone with whom you are on close terms, or a first name basis).

Konnichiwa is very common, and is used throughout the daytime.

Konbanwa is used in the evening as a greeting.

There are also colloquial expressions for men and women that are very casual.

The English word "Hello" translates to "Kon'nichiwa" as written in English. The Japanese spelling uses Kanji characters to write the word and it does not resemble the English spelling of the word.
