The origins of the first stained glass windows are lost in history. The technique probably came from jewelry making, cloisonn and mosaics. Stained glass windows as we know them, seemed to arise when substantial church building began. Use a piece of wood the size you would like the picture frame and cut out the size you would prefer for the picture in the middle. Typically you can find a plain picture frame at your local craft school just for this use. Glue each piece of glass on the frame leaving gaps in-between for the grout. Let glue fully dry. Then pour grout all over and wipe excess off. Once finished filling the grouts use a rag and wipe clean the glass. Let grout dry some then go back and use a damp wipe to fully clean each piece of glass, before the grout dries completely.

If the door will be painted, an MDF panel is a good option. MDF is stable (it will not warp) and also tends to be lower in price than a solid wood or veneer panel. For a cabinet door that will be stained, a wood or veneer panel should be used rather than MDF.

Primitive windows were just holes in a wall. Later, windows were covered with animal hide, cloth, or wood. The Romans were the first to use glass for windows. In Alexandria ca. 100 AD, cast glass windows, albeit with poor optical properties, began to appear. The Romans has stained glass objects but stained glass windows were not made until around 800AD This came from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stained_glass#History http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_stained_glass

Yes. Rubberwood has a natural hue so it can be stained as dark or light as needed.
Glass conducts heat away from your finger more effeciently than wood making it "feel" colder. The wood can only draw a certain amount of heat out of your finger before its limit is met, while the glass' chrystaline structure allows it to act as a heat sink much better than the frame.
Epoxy is best for gluing glass to wood.
