You do not "gauge" them firstly, you stretch them, nor are the plugs that you wear called "gauges". It is a long process that one undertakes generally in childhood in most primitive cultures, but for most other people who do it for accessory reasons be they genuine or simply for fashion, you usually start out at around the mid teens. It is not the goal to get to the biggest possible size the fastest that you can, but to do it gradually, and in most primitive cultures, your ears get larger in accordance to how old you are generally speaking, which is a denotation of age and maturity in a way.

You usually start out at 14 gauge since this is the most common commercial gauge, and the best way to stretch is to use what is referred to as "tape wraps" in where you will switch over to a small sized plug after your lobes are healed and will then do periodic wraps of tape around your plug to make them bigger in a substantially smaller rate than using such things as tapers, which due to their tendency to tear lobes and generally being senseless, most professionals don't advise. The best tape to use in this instance is what is known as "bondage" tape, or rather PTFE tape. This has no actual residue to adhere itself to anything, but rather only sticks to itself, and can be used over and over and cut to any length or width that you need. Next to this is Teflon tape, which works similarly as well since the adhesive is rather minimal and not so tacky and is quite smooth, and then to a lesser extent, is electrical tape. A lot of people don't advise electrical tape, but often, this is the most easily found tape of the bunch, so is used for its availability. Regardless as to what tape you choose to use, these wrapped plugs are only intended to be temporary plugs and you will switch over to the proper plugs of your applicable size from there and then start the process over again, if that be your choose. The general rule of thumb is to not go more than one size bigger per month at very least, and the size that you are going to should be incrementally close to what you were at. Trying to hop sizes will result in pain, blowouts, tearing, and thinning of the bottom lobe.

Before you even begin gauging your ear please look in to it, like look up images of people with various sizes, I suggest finding pictures of people with similar earlobes as your own because depending on your earlobe the look can change dyrastically.

Once you've finally got your mind set on the idea I'd suggest going on amazon and finding a stretching kit startign at 16g or 14g(depending on your ears:16g if you have tiny connected ears, and 14g if they are bigger). I suggest this not only because you get all the sizes you need, but it really is much cheaper than going to spencer's or hot topic. Trust me, you're going to spend about 10-15 dollars per pair at those places, go on amazon you can get 14g-2g or even 00g and get 2 pairs of each size for around 25 bucks. It saves you money for buying plugs as the size you actually want later after you've found a good size for yourself.

Also, make sure to clean your ears quite periodically, sea salt water soaks(MAKE SURE IT IS SEA SALT REGUALR SALT WILL MESS UP YOUR EARS) are the best for your ears, but you can also jsut use antibacterial soap. While your sizing up your ears should tell you when you're ready to size up, but as a rule of thumb generally wait about 3-4 weeks. As you get past 6g, or 8g I suggest taking hot showers to let your ears soften up and use stretching balm. If it hurts at all do not force it in, especially if you feel pain in the very beginning, if it is just tightness that's different. If you feel tightness half-way through a taper then stop, if you feel tightness after you've already used the tape then that can be normal. If it remains tight (I mean VERY TIGHT) for long than a day then downsize.

A good way to keep your ears healthy is vitamin E oil, there are othe oils you can use, but from friends I've heard this one from 8/10 people
