Try to get 1st place on each race in each cup (also works for Wii cups). And if you are going to use a Bullet Bill, only use one. Use it wisely, and if you get a second Bullet Bill, resist and wait until it gets knocked out of you.

∙ 12y agoThe thing about getting 1, 2, or 3 stars is, to be able to get them, you have to apply all of the following to be able to get them in any cup in any difficulty cc:
Do not fall off.
Do not get hit by opponents' items.
Do not run into enemies (meaning beasts, such as Goombas, Chain Chomps, Miis driving cars, Cows, etc.)
Do not run into walls.
Do not get rammed by your opponents.
Stay in first place for the longest time possible.
Get first in every race in the cup.
You should be able to figure this out. If you follow all of these, you will most likely get 3 stars. If you apply most of these, you will probably get 2 stars. If you apply some of these, you will probably get a 1 star. It depends on how many times you follow these. If you fall of many times, get first in all of the races, you may not get a star at all. It all depends on how well you do in all of the races.
