Give them a treat to follow them in or pick them up
Put a dog car harness onto your dog and have the tether already installed and set up in the car for safe travel. Leave your back seat car door open, walk your dog around the car to familiarise him. Get into the back-seat of the car yourself and encourage your dog in with a treat, gradually more until your dog will get up on the seat. This may take time, especially if your dog has previously been scared of going in a car. Spend time in the car with your dog and fasten the dog seat belt so that your dog can move comfortably yet remain safely restrained in one place. For the first ever car journey it is best to stay with your dog whilst someone else drives, so that you can calm your dog/distract him if necessary. Time and patience is needed for some dogs, others just take to it first time.

To prevent your dog from scratching your car door, you can use a car door protector specifically designed to prevent dog scratching. These protectors are typically made of durable materials that can withstand your dog's claws and can be easily attached to your car door to provide a barrier between your dog and the door surface.
First (if your dog throws up in the car, this is a bad idea) get your dog in the car. Get something your dog likes: treats, toys, etc. Don't shut the car door, (it might put pressure on the dog) but do keep a leash on the dog. Start the car up (don't mind the beeping of when a car door isn't shut) but get the thing your dog likes and give it to the dog. If the dog jumps out, try it again with the door shut. It worked on my dog. For more info email: cheywalksdogs@gmail.com
