Both Virus and Bacterial infections are just that caught when a virus or a bacteria become active in the throat they are usually both acquired from other people by spray from coughs and sneezes.
You may be referring to a strepped throat. That would be a throat infected with the streptococcus virus.

I would imagine the whole ear, and if an infection spreads from the throat to the ear, then you should really get that checked.
