Each moshling is ranked depending on how easy or difficult it is to get that moshling. There are four rankings for moshlings: Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Ultra-rare.
To get a moshling of any rank, you have to plant the three seeds required to catch that moshling. Some seeds are only available to Moshi Monster members.
