To evolve a steelix you need to attach a metal coat, which you can obtain on memorial pillar on island 5, then trade the onix to your friend then trade it back and theres your onix.

there water poke assist is preety good
steelix is a steel/ground so fighting is also good
when u get steelix in a bubble go straight to the fighting Pokemon assist and hopefully u should get it that is how i did it so i hope this helped u
