With the tire jacked up so it isn't touching the ground , put 1 lug nut back on loosely so when the wheel comes loose it doesn't go rolling away , and give the front of the tire a kick on one side and if necessary alternate sides . ( some people turn around and kick the tire like a mule kicks ! )
You have to take off the whole dash board to get to the center console!
On my ( 1995 ) Ford Explorer the ( 6 CD changer ) is in the center console under the armrest

From 1995 to 2001 Ford Explorer 4 doors it is a rotary dial on the left side of the CENTER STACK of the dash. From 2002 to 2005 Ford Explorer 4 doors , there are 3 vertical push buttons on the right side of the CENTER STACK of the dash From 2006 on, Ford Explorer 4 doors, there are 3 horizontal push buttons on the CENTER STACK of the dash located above the heater/ air conditioning selector dial. On a 2002 Ford Explorer : Check the center console , in front of the armrest ( for the 12 volt auxiliary power point )
I BELIEVE the GEM is in the center stack of the dash , behind or just to the left of the radio in your 2001 Ford Explorer Sport ( can anyone confirm that ? )
You can tighten the center locking ring as well as tightening the center nut with a powerfull air gun....

If there are no obvious screws gently but firmly it snap out.
As of December 1, 2009 no he is not
