In Windows, you can use the Character Map (charmap.exe) utility from the run line. In Linux you run Character Map from Applications>Accessories. Find the letter then copy and paste it. In most word processing programs, you have a few options:

  • Change the language of the document to the target language and accept the recommended change when the spell checking offers to replace unaccented words or
  • Use the key-stroke shortcuts if they are available. In Microsoft Word, for instance, you use "sticky keys"--to type an n with a tilde (ñ) you hold [Ctrl] type ~ then type n. (See the link for more details)
  • You could also switch keyboards and learn the new keyboard layout if you need to type a lot of accented words.
