For every character in this game, the gift of a 'Most Favourite' item will

elicit three pink hearts that swirl above the character's head. It is not

necessary to give a 'Most Favourite' item, nor any item at all in order to

raise heart levels. What is most important is speaking to the character and

continuing to speak to him/her until you are bidden farewell. The words may

differ from 'See ya' to 'What?' but do not stop the conversation until the

person has said his/her last word.

You need to have at least 1 heart with every individual in the game. When you

have a zero heart level with a character, he/she may announce an intention to

leave the village and will beg you to be kind should you ever meet again.

At 2 hearts, you will experience an event with every eligible girl and

bachelor. The individual will visit you at 6.00 a.m. to give you a gift. You

will receive a Musical Note afterwards. At 4 hearts, you will receive a

letter from any eligible girl/bachelor of the opposite gender and at five

hearts, you will receive another visit, with a more valuable gift. With

individuals of your own gender, you will not receive the visit and gift at

five hearts but instead, you will receive a letter.

As far as marriage is concerned, a successful proposal requires at least 9

hearts. If you have a zero heart level with an eligible bachelor/girl, you

may experience a 'rival heart event' involving that person and your rival.

You can raise the heart level of every bachelor/girl to 10 and then decide

which one you wish to marry. It is easy enough to lower heart levels in this

game. Almost every one detests weeds, and the gift of a weed will lower the

heart level by a full heart instantly! Every one detests the act of littering

and if you throw an item on the ground and fail to retrieve it, you will lose

a full heart with EVERY ONE in Flower Bud Village.

Incidentally, if you wish to have a child, you need to give gifts to your

spouse and speak to him/her after marriage. Many individuals will warn you

about the dangers of neglecting your spouse!

Most Favourite Items

You may notice that Special Products such as a Special Egg, Special Milk,

Shiny Wool or Special Yarn are 'Most Favourite' items for many individuals.

Depending on your financial status, you may wish to keep a few of these

special items as gifts for people with whom your heart level is low. In

Magical Melody, a person will not acknowledge his/her birthday when you give a

gift unless it is an item that individual really loves. It may not be

the 'Most Favourite' item in every case, but the gift of one will guarantee

acknowledgement that it is his/her birthday.

Bear in mind the fact that Special Products may not be every one's favourite.

Some people are indifferent to an item, whether it is ordinary or special. A

Special Egg given to some one who is indifferent to eggs in general will not

elicit any excitement.

The occasion when a 'Most Favourite' item truly may be needed is when you need

to raise some one's heart level quickly. If you have a heart level of 0 with

some one and are in danger of losing that person imminently, you definitely

should try to give him/her a 'Most Favourite' daily until the heart level

reaches 1. 'Seasonal' characters like Nami and the Gourmet should be

given 'Most Favourites' whenever possible as you only have one season to raise

heart levels in these cases. Until the Junk Shop is expanded, Louis is a

character who can be difficult to find, and thus it may be advantageous to

give him a 'Most Favourite' item whenever possible. Ronald and Dan can be

difficult to find until the Paradise Orchard opens and you therefore should

seize every opportunity to give them 'Most Favourite' or at least highly

favoured items. Lyla is another character who is not available on a daily

basis until she opens the Hearty Lyla Gift Shop.

People like Terry, on the other hand, can be found daily at the same location

and even if you do not give gifts on every occasion, by speaking to him every

day, you can raise his heart level on a steady basis. It therefore is not

necessary to give him a 'Most Favourite' item, although in his case, mushrooms

are plentiful in every season and are not particularly valuable.

You will see that a Special Egg is by far the most popular with the largest

number of people. An ordinary egg actually, whether raw or boiled, is a good

gift that even if not the 'Most Favourite' item, will please most people.

Very few people in Flower Bud Valley dislike eggs.

Please note that there is a difference often between the response you will

obtain with an Ordinary Crop and a Fertilised Crop. A 'Most Favourite'

response may be obtained when you give the individual a Fertilised item, but

not when you give the same person the Ordinary item. Incidentally, vegetables

sold at the Spring Farm are NOT Fertilised crops, despite their high prices.
