If an eleven year old will not do her homework on her own, you need to find the reason for it. Is she having trouble understanding the material? Is she not interested in learning? Is she seeking attention? Does she want to be doing something else?

The reason she refuses to do homework on her own will determine how to handle the situation. If she is having trouble understanding the material, she may need someone to explain it to her or to teach her better study habits. If she is not interested in learning, ways to get her interested in learning may need to be found. If she is seeking attention, praising her when she does her homework might help. If she wants to be doing something else, using allowing her to do that after her homework is done might be the answer to getting her to do her homework on her own.

First, if the chore is in the afternoon after school, give him a snack to slow him down. Ask him to show you what assignments he's been given. If he has dificulty with a particular subject, tell him that if he has questions in that area, you'll be happy to discuss them with him. And if there are specific questions in any subject that he absolutely cannot answer, even with the help of a dictionary or the computer, attempt to research it with him to satisfy the homework assignment.

Hope to ingrain in his pre-teen mind the concept that the homework must be completed prior to anything else he has in mind, with the exception of the evening meal. If he's doing the homework in his room, make sure the TV or other attractions are turned off.

Encourage him by advising him that if he completes his assignments satisfactorily, he'll have permission to watch TV or do something with friends, altough he must be home and in bed by a certain time.
