Honorary degrees are also sometimes referred to as honoris causa degrees, or honorary doctorates.
An honorary degree or a degree honoris causa is an academic degree for which a university or Church such as the Universal Life Church World Headquarters has waived the usual requirements. Degrees from a Church must be Church related in nature for example; a Doctorate of Divinity, a Doctorate of Biblical Studies, a Doctorate of Theology and/or a Doctorate of Pastoral Care would all be considered Church related. Unfortunately some churches use this loophole within the law to make a buck and attempt to sell such degrees.
The most common doctorate degree is the Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D. The requirements for a doctorate typically entail completion of an undergraduate program, acceptance into a doctoral program, completing necessary coursework, comprehensive exams, and defending a dissertation.

To obtain an honorary doctorate, a university or institution typically selects individuals who have made significant contributions to their field or society. You cannot apply for an honorary doctorate; it is usually bestowed upon you based on your achievements and merits, often through a nomination or recommendation process. Honorary doctorates are awarded as a recognition of excellence and are not earned through academic coursework or research.
